Tata and the region around it
Tata is at the Western foot of the Gerecse Mountains, in an amazing environment, with rich flora and fauna. Tata, “the town of living waters” is a town rich in experiences where besides the line of places of interest, events, natural treasures that seems endless the culinary pleasures also dominate. When visiting the town it is worth visiting Lake Öreg, the Castle of Tata, the Esterházy-palace, the English garden, Lake Cseke, Lake Derítő, Lake Réti, Fényes Bath, the Agostyán Arboretum, and the water mills.
Lake Öreg is in the middle of Tata, the castle of Tata is at its shores and the Esterházy-palace is near the castle. Lake Öreg (Öreg-tó) is one of the oldest artificial lakes in Hungary; the purpose of the lake itself and the swamps belonging to it was to protect the castle. The lake is especially great for water sports, restaurants, cafés are on its shores but you can even have a picnic under the sycamore trees of the neighboring parks that provide cool shades to rest under. The romantic water castle is home to the Domonkos Kuny Museum (Domonkos Kuny Múzeum), in which you can see permanent exhibitions on local history, and you can also see the famous Gothic knight’s hall the jewel of which is a huge stove with the image of a knight. The architectural treasures of the late baroque Esterházy-palace (Esterházy-kastély), its interior with decorated design, and its sentimental garden and English park with its origins in the 18th century make the palace a unique sight.
In the English garden (Angolkert) you can find rare plants, artificial ruins, caves, a palm house and an outdoors stage, and in its heart there is Lake Cseke (Cseke-tó), the heaven of fishermen. The line of the living waters of the town is not over with Lake Cseke at all, fishermen also have a central role on Lake Derítő (Derítő-tó) and Lake Réti (Réti-tavak).
However, the Fényes Bath (Fényes Fürdő) also favors those wishing to bathe (from the beginning of June until the end of August), where you can dive in a 22oC spring lake with unique surroundings. Three pools, slides, two saunas (on the shore of the spring lake) and catering units are in the area of the bath.
You can see about 380 evergreen and 40 broadleaf species of trees and shrubs in the Agostyán Arboretum (Agostyáni Arborétum) the significant dimensions of which present an impressive sight for those visiting here. Seeing the water mills is also an interesting program, but if the weather is nice the sights of the Kálvária hill (Kálvária-domb) also attract tourists, and in the winter it is a good choice for sleighing. Skating on the skating rink covered with a tent might also be a pastime for chillier months, or you can participate in the events and festivals of the town that follow each other all year round.
The settlements around Tata also flood you with programs: Tatabánya, Vértesszőlős, Etyek, Esztergom, Dobogókő, Visegrád, Komárom, Bábolna, Győr, Kisbér, Mór, Eplény, Gárdony and Velencefürdő.
The Turul monument, the Selim-cave, the Outdoors Mining Museum and Gyémánt Spa is in Tatabánya. The turul is an ancient Hungarian symbol, the mythological bird of the origin legends. The monument, which is the largest bronze bird of Europe, reaches towards the sky on the top of the Tatabánya Kő-hegy. Starting from the mountain which has an amazing panoramic view, you can get to the Selim cave (Szelim-barlang) on the Turul educational path. This popular hiking destination is a 45 m long natural formation in which ancient archeological findings were found, proving that ages ago prehistoric men lived in it. You can see a mineral exhibition, the equipment of the office of the manager and the engineer, mining safety equipment, and a mine manager’s apartment with authentic equipment in the Outdoors Mining Museum (Szabadtéri Bányászati Múzeum). A machinery exhibition was presented outdoors, and a five apartment miner’s house was furnished with the characteristic interior of homes of miners between the two world wars. An old smithy, barber shop, tailor’s shop can be visited as well, with the presentation of experts in authentic clothing on notable days. Gyémánt Spa (Gyémánt Fürdő), which is open all year round, is made up of indoors spa, beach, swimming pool and sauna world parts, complete with an adventure park, sports venues, massage, playhouse, interactive programs. Occupying five thousand square meters, the complex is considered to be among the beaches of Europe with the most beautiful location. 15 pools with elements enhancing the experience, indoors and outdoors slides, Finnish sauna with refills, infra sauna, steam cabin and aroma cabin serve the needs of every age group. Skating is also possible in the city in the winter, on the outdoors artificial ice rink. In the chilling cold the hot tea or mulled wine that can be bought in the ice buffet near the skating rink is great for warming yourselves up.
Vértesszőlős is between Tata and Tatabánya; this settlement has been populated since the ancient times. I became known worldwide when the living space of one of the oldest prehistoric men in Europe, Sam, who lived about half a million years ago, was discovered. The remains of the bones of the prehistoric man, his tools and his preserved footprint can be seen at the Vértesszőlős Archaeological Exhibition (Prehistoric Settlement) of the Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum).

The highest point of the Visegrádi-mountains (Visegrádi-hegység) is Dobogókő. On Dobogókő the air is crystal clear and amazing view awaits the visitors; you can ski, sleigh in the winter on the steep courses with ski lifts, and on the hiking trails starting from the settlement you can discover the environment with its especially diverse terrain. For example you can visit the famous Rám-ravine (Rám-szakadék) where you can defeat a 112 m of difference in height between the two end points of the one kilometer long ravine; the rock walls of the ravine sometimes reach the height of 35 meters. You can discover the valleys, caves, lakes of the mountains or simply rest in the nice air, enjoy the beautiful panorama, gaze at the sight of nature, listen to the birds chirping, in the company of refreshing lemonade in the summer and in the company of a cup of hot tea or mulled wine in the winter.
