Siófok, “the capital of the Balaton” is a bustling town full of tourists in the summer. Although the intense atmosphere takes a step back, there is still no lack of experiences, program opportunities.
The holiday zone of Siófok is made up of two parts: Golden Beach and Silver Beach. The Eastern part is the Golden Beach (Aranypart), most of the hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, events, festivals and the Siófok Free Beach (Siófoki Szabadstrand), the Grand Beach (Nagystrand), Galerius Adventure Spa and Wellness Centre (Galerius Élményfürdő és Wellness Központ), the Port (Kikötő), Petőfi Promenade (Petőfi Sétány), Sió Pláza and the Water Tower (Víztorony) are here.
Mostly apartments and pensions are in line on the Silver Beach (Ezüstpart), and there are free beaches all along the shoreline. The seasonally open Palace Dance Club is also here.
The open beach (free) lies along the Golden Shore for 3.5-4km, amongst the villas, hotels, restaurants and the Balaton. On the beach you can rest in the cool shade of the leafy trees, or play ball games, swim, pedalo in the largest lake of Hungary, Lake Balaton. This part of the shore also has slide and closed course waterski. A bay protected by a pier can be found in the part closer to the town center, it is ideal for families with small children due to the shallow water and the sandy beach. The selection of the buffets, cafés is characterized by the Hungarian cuisine, but it does not take a long walk to order international courses in the restaurants with a wide selection.
The Grand Beach (Nagystrand) (against fee) is the central beach of Siófok, and in the summer it is the most visited beach of the Balaton and at the same time, of Hungary. The area of the beach on the Eastern side of the boat station, in the middle of the Petőfi promenade is more than 8 hectares. The shore once known as Beach Club now bears the name Siófok Beach (Siófok Plázs). During the day swimming, sun tanning, pedaloeing are popular, replaced in the evening by awesome parties, music events. You can do active sports on the sandy beach, like yoga, aerobic, bungee jumping, surfing, beach volleyball, beach football, trampoline. Additionally, sunbeds, terrace, pool, beach library, street workout field, playground, SUP (rowing standing up) and a Ferris wheel, the Siófok Eye is here for you to try so you can have diverse programs. The catering units offer tasty meals, besides the lángos, hamburger, hot-dog, pizza, pancakes, fried hake fish, cooked corn, fried sausage, fried black pudding, goulash that are considered traditional beach food you can have several types of soups, pasta, freshly fried meat. The cocktail bars, cafés take care of artisan beers, excellent wines, cocktails, iced beverages, coffees.
The Galerius Adventure Spa and Wellness Centre (Galerius Élményfürdő és Wellness Központ), open all year round, is an approximately 800 square meter establishment, with 6 indoor and outdoor pools all year round for swimming enthusiasts. You can find a adventure pool, hot water pool, bubble pool, children’s pool, training pool, outdoor hot water pool, slides, Jacuzzi, Finnish sauna, bio sauna, infra sauna, light and aroma therapy sauna, diving pool, steam cabin, tepidarium, salt cave, sea air cabin, standing and lying tanning beds, massage, wellness treatments in the bath. The snack bar and the cocktail bar take care of eating.
The thermal water of the bath is expressly useful for treating musculoskeletal problems, gynecological and urological diseases, dermatological abnormalities, and for the post treatment of accidental injuries and orthopedic surgeries.
The Siófok Harbor (Siófoki Kikötő) is the largest boat station of the Balaton. With the boats departing according to schedule all year round you can explore several town on the shore of the lake, you can get to for example Balatonfüred or Tihany. Besides scheduled boat rides it is possible to participate in pleasure boat rides, sailing boat rides, fairy tale, music and children’s boat rides, retro disco boat rides, ferry rides, boat renting, and you can even fish nearby.
The famous Petőfi Promenade (Petőfi Sétány) offers entertainment opportunities for children and adults alike. Several restaurants, cafés, fairs, souvenir shops are on both sides of the promenade, but you can also find arcades, amusement park, karaoke bars, discos, open long into the night. The atmosphere, the colorful crowd, nice smells and heavenly tastes, happy people, echoing laughs draw you in. This makes Siófok full of life in the evening as well as during the day.
The Sió Pláza mall is in a frequented location that can be accessed easily, on the Main Square (Fő tér), near the Water Tower (Víztorony). Hypermarkets, restaurants, shops, cafés follow each other in the complex and around it. The Main Square serves as a location for events, fairs, concerts all year round.
Siófok and the Balaton are beautiful from above as well. However, you do not have to go far or get on a plane to gaze at the won der of the panorama of the town. The Water Tower (Víztorony) is in the heart of Siófok, near the Sió Plaza, reaching to the heights; you can get to its top by elevator the easiest. The sight is breathtaking; it is a must to see.
After you’ve seen and tried everything, visit a festival as well, get to know the culture of the country better. And if you explored the Golden Shore, visit the Silver Shore as well, where you can also choose from beaches and holiday activities or visit the largest entertainment venue of the town, the Palace Dance Club. This entertainment venue has a two level arena, garden area, party pool and a pizzeria that is open until the end of the party. The greatest hit songs, a crazy atmosphere and raging parties await here from the middle of June until the end of August.
It is not only in the summer that Siófok and the Balaton offers unforgettable experiences! Those who like cycling, can explore the wonderful region on the bicycle road that goes around all of Lake Balaton (2010 km), be it covered with golden leaves, snow or colorful flowers. Lake Balaton is the largest lake of Central Europe, 77km long and 14 km wide at some places. The Tihanyi peninsula (Tihanyi-félsziget) reaches into the “Hungarian sea” at its Northeastern part, the relief, flora and fauna of which attracts tourists. It can be easily accessed from the Southern shore as well with a scheduled boat trip. The Balaton Highland National Park (Balaton-felvidéki Nemzeti Park), the Badacsony wine region and the Tapolca basin (Tapolcai medence) borders the lake from the North. Its water is deeper in the North and shallower in the South but is really great for swimming on both sides. Several waterside towns are worth visiting due to the abundance of spectacles and programs, like Tihany, Balatonfüred, Tapolca, Keszthely, Fonyód, Zamárdi, Siófok. Animals, plants, parks, boat riding, fishing, swimming, palaces, castles, gastronomy and music festivals, thermal baths and spas. You simply cannot be bored near the Balaton in any of the seasons, whether you choose water or land: pedalo, boats, ships, canoe, wakeboard, water ski, windsurfing, sailing, motorboat, flyboard, jet ski, water tours, water basketball, water volleyball, bungee jumping, land sports courses, horse riding, karting, amusement park, helicopters, plane rides, parachuting, paragliding, skydiving, hot air balloon, etc… You can watch outdoor theatre shows, or if you like festivals then you should absolutely visit the Balatonboglár Jazz and Wine Festival (Balatonboglári Jazz és Borfesztivál), several gastronomic events or such huge parties like Balaton Sound, B My Lake, Beach Festival (Strand Fesztivál) or the VeszprémFeszt.

Veszprém is to the North of the Eastern corner of Lake Balaton. Although it is not a settlement directly on the shore, it is still a popular destination of tourists. It is a small town with an ambience, madfe really interesting by Veszprém Zoo (Veszprémi Állatkert), the Archbishop’s Palace (Érseki Palota), the Dubniczay palace (Dubniczay-palota), Szent Mihály Basilica (Szent Mihály Bazilika), several museums, galleries, cultural and music events. The experience is enhanced by gastronomical specialties and tasty wines. The castle quarter, consisting of palaces, museums and churches, is one mall, but this is the best preserved baroque street of the country. Tourists not afraid of climbing stairs find an amazing panorama from the top of Firetower (Tűztorony). Furthermore, the town is home to the exceptional men’s handball club team of Hungary, Telekom Veszprém.
Balatonfüred is the “capital” of the Northern shore of Lake Balaton. It is also called the town of festivals, its selection of programs is exceptional in the region (gastronomy, arts, literature, sports, classical music concert series and festivals). Events defining the identity of the town, enjoying a high level of interest internationally are, for example, the Anna Ball (Anna-bál) or the Wine Weeks (Borhetek). The Tagore promenade (Tagore-sétány) is a central part of the town at the end of which you can find the wonderful Vitorlás square (Vitorlás tér) with a park, benches, fountain and an impressive look to the Balaton. The exclusive Esterházy beach (Esterházy strand) is along the promenade, in the special health and holiday zone while the familial Kisfaludy beach (Kisfaludy strand) is on the Eastern side of town, on the Aranyhíd promenade. The Annagora Aquapark (from the middle of June until the end of August), has 11 outdoor and indoor pools, slides and wellness part for You. Besides all the above, Balatonfüred offers the following: extreme bike and adventure park, golf and yacht club, horse riding, boat port – boating and other water sports, overlook, hiking destinations, game park, limestone cave, bowling, squash and further indoor sporting opportunities, paintball, tank driving and amusement ride in a horse carriage. You can also sleigh and ski nearby in the winter and of the surface of Lake Balaton is covered with ice, you can even skate on the lake!
Tihany is on the Tihany peninsula (Tihanyi-félsziget) which is rich in spectacular natural features, reaching into the Balaton. One of the interesting programs of the town is the Tihany echo (tihanyi visszhang), created between the Abbey of Tihany and Echo Hill, when buildings have not yet bar the free travelling of sound to and fro. In clear, silent weather it can still be experienced, especially in the winter. From the towers of the Tihany Benedictine Abbey (Tihanyi Bencés Apátság) all of Lake Balaton can be seen, the church and the vista from its towers are equally impressive. The town is also famous for its lavender plantations, the Tihany Lavender Festival and the Lavender Weeks (Tihanyi Levendula Fesztivál és Levendula Hetek) are organized each summer. From its programs, “Harvest Yourself!”(“Szedd Magad”) is exceptional, in the course of which the participants can harvest the lavenders to be purchased themselves in the purple, fragrant field. The only, mostly intact hermitage in Central Europe is also here, the local name of the location is “apartments of the friars”. The hermitage (remetetelep) is the entirety of cells, chapels and dining halls carved from the cliffs between the 11th and the 14th centuries by hermits following the Orthodox Greek liturgy.
Badacsony is a mountain of the Tapolca basin, reaching to the heights wedged between the two bays of Lake Balaton. The hilly region is a true paradise for hikers who like to be close to nature.
Besides the amazing flora and fauna you can find castles, castle ruins, museums, chapels in this region, and cozy restaurants, guesthouses, wine cellars provide the gastronomical experiences.
Tapolca is north of Lake Balaton, it is already a part of the Balaton Highland National Park (Balaton-felvidéki Nemzeti Park). A matchless exhibition presents the wonderful world of karst regions while boating in the Lake Cave of Tapolca. The special spectacles of 10 rooms guide you to the world of mysterious caves.
Keszthely is in the Western corner of Balaton, near the famous thermal baths, Hévíz, Kehidakustány and Zalaegerszeg. Also it is worth visiting the Cadillac Museum (Cadillac Múzeum), the Doll Museum (Babamúzeum), the Vidor Toy Museum (Vidor Játékmúzeum), the Marzipan Museum and Confectionery (Marcipán Múzeum és Cukrászda), the Bacchus Wine Museum (Bacchus Bormúzeum) or the picturesque Festetics Palace (Festetics-kastély), among the permanent exhibitions of which you can find the Aristocratic Lifestyle Exhibition and Helikon Library (Főúri Életforma és Helikon Könyvtár), the Palm House (Pálmaház), the Hunting, Coach and Historical Model Railway Exhibitions (vadászati, hintó és történelmi modellvasút kiállítás). Besides the palace and the museums the town proudly presents several further spectacles, architectural masterpieces, exhibitions. Besides culture entertainment has an important role as well, concentrated in the vicinity of Balaton side beaches.
Gyenesdiás and Vonyarcvashegy are to the East of Keszthely. In Gyenesdiás the Eco-adventure Park (Öko-Kalandpark) is in a beautiful environment, a course system of 70 obstacles offers challenge in the park for the visitors. The park, made up of varied dexterity obstacles with different levels of difficulty, installed on trees, offer challenge, exciting, unforgettable experience, for children and adults, families and groups of friends alike. The Lidó Beach (Lidó Strand) is in the other end of the 3 hectares large forest, in Vonyarcvashegy; this beach offers a unique experience among the Balaton beaches. For example: surfing school, water skiing course, sports venues, fitness park, water taxi, pedalo, water aerobics, giant slide, minigolf, cycling, boating, sailing, fishing, playgrounds, water stage, animation programs, buffets, restaurants, events. Its sandy shoreline and children’s pool also enhance the joy of the little ones.
Going around the Balaton in our guide we get back to the Southern shore, Fonyód. The longest pier of the lake is here, along which a wonderful park, imposing lines of shops and restaurants were established. You can get to the Sipos mountain overlook (Sipos hegyi kilátó) on a forest road, from there all of the Balaton can be seen, in a manner which is exceptional on the Southern shore.
The famous festivals of light music, organized in each year, like Balaton Sound, B My Lake, and Beach Festival (Strand Fesztivál), and the 3 km long free beach, rich in sports and entertainment opportunities, and the Zamárdi Adventure Park (Zamárdi Kalandpark) give Zamárdi its charm. Adrenaline has the main role in the adventure park, the cableway, obstacle and sliding courses, water dodgem and other games, the steamboat, the jumping tower, the labyrinth can soon become the favorite of little ones and adults alike.
Balatonfűzfő is also exceptional in the field of active programs, in Balaton Bob Leisure Centre (BalatoniBob Szabadidőpark) visitors can try bobsleigh (panorama and tunnel tracks), Serpa Adventure Park (Serpa Kalandpark; part of the leisure centre), climbing tower, archery, paintball, cableway slide and adventure path.
Tours on foot and by bicycle, hikes, festivals, events, museums, exhibitions, gastronomical experiences, etc. await you always, all year round, however, the water of Lake Balaton is the best for swimming in late spring, in the summer and in early autumn. However, you have no reason to be sad if the weather is bad or in the colder months, since several thermal baths provide an alternative in the region, the curative power of which baths is also exceptional. For example: Siófok (Galerius Spa), Gárdony, Tamási, Igal, Buzsák, Marcali, Zalakaros, Hévíz (Thermal Lake), Kehidakustány, Zalaegerszeg.
If you time your travels for the winter months, Eplény is a must on your list. On the 7984 m long track system of the Eplény Ski Arena (Eplényi Síaréna) you can enjoy winter sports on 16 different routes. The longest ski track of Hungary (1927 m long) you can ski through without stopping is in Eplény. From absolute beginners to professionals everyone feels great in the plethora of different tracks, be it snowboarder, skier or a lover of sleighing.
